Supplements can absolutely be a total waste of money.
Let’s look at what supplements claim to do for you, if it’s worth it, and why supplements could be a total waste of money for you.
What exactly are supplements?
The word supplement means “a thing added to something else in order to complete or enhance it”.
Why would you need to take a supplement?
Your body needs quite a complex collection of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to be able to perform at its best. If you’ve been feeling tired with no energy for example, then you could be deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral and want to boost your levels.
Consider if you need the supplement.
Try to establish if you actually need supplements. What results are you looking for? Supplements can be harmful if you exceed the recommended dose or read the cautions on the label so you need to spend some time making sure they’re right for you.
Are supplements worth it?
Let’s take vitamin D as an example. GPs agree that in the UK we don’t get enough vitamin D and that supplementation is highly recommended, particularly from October to March.
There are a variety of reasons why we don’t get enough vitamin D. In case you hadn’t noticed, we don’t get that much sun. When we do get some sun, we slap on the sun cream, cover ourselves up, and wear a hat and sunglasses. The vitamin D we would get from the sunlight becomes blocked.
Of course, we do need to wear the sunscreen so it can all get quite complicated.
You may choose to take vitamin D so that you know you’re covered, and that it’s one less thing to worry about. Vitamin D is usually created from direct sunlight and is needed to help keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. You can get some vitamin D from foods but it’s knowing if you’re getting enough, that’s the problem.
Why use supplements for health?
Maybe you want to protect against a medical condition like osteoporosis for example. You may decide that you want to take specially formulated supplements for joints containing all the necessary nutrients to make sure your bones are staying healthy. You could also give collagen powder a try as this can be remarkably effective. Ideally this should be as well as eating a healthy and balanced diet.
There are many types of health conditions that could be helped by supplements. Maybe you want to boost your immune system, enjoy a healthy pregnancy, or assist with a healthy transition into the menopause? You may have been suffering from aching joints, skin problems, digestive issues or are simply stressed and tired.
Many of these everyday health conditions can be a deficiency that can be helped with supplements. It can be difficult to get everything you need from food, especially with modern farming methods and the stress of modern living.
Some supplements don’t replace or replenish levels of essential nutrients at all. They have been found to have qualities that help improve our general health. Turmeric for example, can help with pain and inflammation. Maca root can help with energy a whole host of other problems, evening primrose oil can help with hormonal balance.
If you are looking for help with everyday health issues it is important to do your research. If you’re not deficient in anything and you feel great then it is highly likely that for you, supplements would definitely be a waste of money.
You know the saying. “If it ‘aint broke don’t fix it”. Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it and know that if there ever is a time when you think that you’re lacking in something at least they’re there for you, once you’ve done your research of course.
